Te Teksid Group, Torino, Italy, has initiated compacted

graphite iron (CGI) product development for commercial vehicle and industrial power cylinder head programs at its met- alcasting facility in Monclova, Mexico. In preparation for the start of series production, Teksid ordered a full refurbishment of its existing SinterCast process control system, including an upgrade to the current System 3000 standard. Te new System 3000 has been configured to accommodate future increases in CGI production volume, including additional sampling capac- ity and automated base treatment by cored wire. Te System 3000 will ship from Sweden and be installed

in early 2013, to enable independent product development and series production. In response to increased CGI market demand, Teksid also plans to install SinterCast-CGI series production capability at its metalcasting facility in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. “Following the initial installation of the SinterCast System

2000, 10 years ago, we have supported the CGI activities of our customers,” said Dr Riccardo Tarantini, president and CEO, Teksid (S.p.A.). “Now, as the CGI development activities have led to new series production opportunities, we are pleased to invest in the latest CGI process control advances.” Teksid, a member of the Fiat Group, operates iron casting

facilities in Brazil, China, France, Poland, Portugal and Mexico, as well as two aluminium casting facilities in Italy and Brazil. Te production of iron components such as cylinder blocks and heads, exhaust manifolds, crankshafts, camshafts and suspen- sion components is primarily destined for Caterpillar, Chrysler, Cummins, Deutz, Fiat, Iveco, Mack and Renault. Teksid has annual sales of more than $1 billion and employs more than 8,000 people. 

Brazilian cast iron cylinder block and head metalcasting

group Tupy has received an order for a new high volume com- pacted graphite iron (CGI) passenger vehicle cylinder block, to be produced at its North American base in Saltillo, Mexico. Following the start of production in 2013, the order

calls for a ramp-up to more than 300,000 cylinder blocks per year, making the new program the highest volume CGI cylinder block in the world. Te new CGI cylinder block will become Tupy’s 18th CGI component. In preparation for the start of series production, Tupy

has ordered a fully automated process control system from Swedish CGI specialist SinterCast. Te System 3000 Plus has been jointly specified by Tupy and SinterCast engineers to automatically control the base treatment, process con- trol measurement and final adjustment of magnesium and inoculant prior to casting. 
