restarting the simulation with modified diecasting process con- ditions, based on the previous or next-to-last casting cycle. Sand casting processes can be resumed with different condi-

tions at the end of any process stage. Te automatic enmesh- ment of complex geometries has been simplified with new enmeshment criteria and procedures. MAGMA5 is modularly expandable for specific processes,

materials or quality aspects: • MAGMAiron, MAGMAsteel, MAGMAnonferrous— material-specific modules allow the prediction of microstruc- tures and properties and consider alloys and metallurgy.

• MAGMAhpdc, MAGMAlpdc, MAGMApermanent- mold, MAGMAwheel—process modules allow the consideration of specific process requirements and control of the manufacturing process.

• MAGMAcore+mold, MAGMAdielife—products and functionalities for the prediction of core shooting, gas- sing, and purging and the assessment of die life aid in making the best use of available knowledge.

• MAGMA HT thermal, MAGMAstress, MAGMA- link—modules for simulating stresses of the component after casting, heat treatment, or machining and the ex- change of information based on simulation results assures the design of cast parts for their performance. Stress simulation results can be prepared for faster post-pro-

cessing. For the quantitative assessment of casting distortion in the measurement perspective, it is now possible to compare the virtual measurement with the real part geometry. In addition, a new database of riser sleeves, generated by ASK Chemicals, is now available. Casting process simulation allows designers to optimize

designs by ensuring the desired material properties without maintaining excessive safety margins. It also facilitates com- munication between development, production, management, sales and casting buyers to ensure castable parts are produced

tomotive industry or the pressure to manufacture increasingly better products at lower cost require creative diecasting solu- tions. An innovative answer to this is the “Lost Core” technol- ogy (salt core technology), from Buhler, Uzwil, Switzerland. What the automotive industry is calling for is cost

reduction, integral design (reduction in the number of components) and higher productivity. Te “Lost Core” technology opens up diverse opportunities for this. With this technology, certain parts of the component to be cast are recessed with a salt core, which is then rinsed out again. Tis makes it possible for permanent mold and sand cast components to be replaced while providing the full benefits of diecasting, such as material savings, shorter cycle times and reduced post-processing. “Lost Core” enables the development of completely new
