It’s Imperative to Implement a Green Pattern in the Metalcasting Industry

Environmentally friendly manufacturing is a modern

manufacturing pattern which takes environmental influence and resource consumption into consideration and is the future trend in manufacturing. It is imperative the metal- casting industry evolves in an environmentally friendly man- ner. Green metalcasting is defined by using less and zero pollution raw and auxiliary materials in the whole manu- facturing cycle, optimizing the design of castings and crafts, adopting advanced casting techniques, crafts and manufac- turing devices, and employing such techniques as controlling pollution from the start and recycling to achieve a pattern of the 4Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle and remanufacture, ensuring resource conservation, environmental friendliness and safe manufacturing. Despite the fact that the total casting production has

reached 41,500,000 tons in China in 2011, the average scale of the plants remain small. Te overall craft and equipping level cannot meet the demands of that in the advanced countries. Meanwhile, there is still a gap between advanced countries and China in terms of energy consumption and pollutant disposal, which demands that we transform the current development pattern characterized by high energy consumption and pollution into a sustainable one. It is widely believed that Chinese industry development should be paralleled by the green casting pattern adopted in the foundry industry. Metalcasting is acknowledged to be the pillar industry

for the Chinese equipment industry, so the government has formulated equipment manufacturing restructuring and revitalization plans, the 12th five-year development plan of machinery basic parts, fundamental manufacturing craft and basic material industry, and put forward several proposals to shift the comparatively adverse conditions in fundamental industries, metalcasting in particular, to promote the basic manufacturing practices and improve the matching capabil- ity between the mainframe and corresponding components. Tis will provide great potential for the Chinese foundry industry. Te country has initiated the concept of building a beautiful China in 2012 by taking the following measures: vigorously advocating ecological civilization, adhering to the fundamental policy of resource conservation and environ- mental protection, promoting the environmentally-friendly, cyclic and low-carbon development pattern, and forming the energy-saving and environmentally friendly model with the intention of reversing the ecologically deteriorating trend. In 2011, the 12th five-year plan guideline also points out that in the face of increasingly scarce resources, we must enhance the sense of crisis, bear in mind green and low-carbon develop-
